A letter for Educators from the Artistic Director:
Dear Friends,
My name is Deb Royals. I am the Artistic Director for The Justice Theater Project (JTP). The mission of the JTP seeks to call to the fore of public attention the needs of the poor, the marginalized, and the oppressed through the use of the performing arts. Every JTP season includes productions and educational programming to live out this mission.
We write you this letter to invite you and your students to our upcoming production of Nickel and Dimed by Joan Holden (a play based on the book Nickel and Dimed, On (Not) Getting By in America by Barbara Ehrenreich). Nickel and Dimed is the first show of our 2016 -2017 season entitled “Economic Justice?” The ultimate purpose of economic justice is to free each person to engage creatively in the unlimited work beyond economics, that of the mind and the spirit. This season will feature performances and discussions about the importance of economic justice and the human right to make a productive contribution to our country’s economy.
JTP encourages high school teachers, professors and instructors to bring students to Nickel and Dimed. (Suggested for grades 11+) The JTP Education/Action committee has also planned two important discussions with low-wage workers, business owners and facilitators who are experts in the field of economics. You and your students are encouraged to attend one of the following discussions at no charge.

· RALEIGH: Tuesday, September 27, 6:30 PM The Loading Dock. Collaborative Workspace and B Corporation. 1053 E Whitaker Mill Road, Raleigh.

We will also host pre-performance discussions before performances on October 8, 15, and 22. (Check our website for speakers and beginning times.) We are happy to discuss workshop possibilities for educators and students. We offer a “back-stage” pass for educators and students to meet actors, tour the set and see the costumes up close. We also encourage research, study and discussion prior to the show. There are many websites that discuss Nickel and Dimed.
